Patron saint of girls, teenagers, youth, Catholic youth, rape survivors, poverty, purity, forgiveness; also known as the "chaste patroness of modern youth" (oof)
Lived 1890 to 1902 Beatified 1947 Canonized 1950 Maria Goretti was eleven years old (11 years 9 months and 21 days) when she was attacked by an eighteen-year-old farmhand. What follows requires a trigger warning: When Maria's attacker seized her, she was in the process of mending his shirt. Maria tried to intervene on God's behalf, noting that the Lord didn't wish it. "You will go to hell for it!" She shouted. Her attacker struck at her "blindly with a long dagger." She was eleven years old and he stabbed her eleven times and later an additional three. Upon being rushed to the hospital, Maria underwent surgery without anesthesia. She then forgave her murderer and stated she wished to be reunited with him in Heaven. She died 24 hours after the attack, gazing at a portrait of the Virgin and clutching a cross to her breast. One night, while he slept unrepentant in prison, Maria appeared to her attacker in a vision or dream, gathering and offering him lilies, which "burned immediately in his hands" or (in another account) one-by-one "turned into a still white flame." He experienced a change of heart, and upon his release he begged Maria's mother for forgiveness. She gave it to him. In 1950, her mother and her murderer attended her canonization together.
